Sean and Michele Steefel of Broken Arrow have had a dream of opening their own
martial arts academy for 12 years. The dream became reality in March of 2009,
when they became co-owners and instructors at their Moo Do Academy of Karate in
Broken Arrow.
When he was 12 years old and living in Connecticut, Sean
began his lifelong involvement with the martial arts. He became an instructor in
1985, and has now attained the ranking of fifth degree master instructor in the Tang
Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan Association (American Brotherhood of the Empty Hand Defense).
Sean met Michele at the academy in Connecticut where he was an instructor, when
she was doing postgraduate work at Yale. Michele has now attained the ranking of
second degree and was recently profiled in the
Community Spirit Magazine. Together, the two of
them have over 35 years of martial arts experience.
At Moo Do Academy of Karate in the Broken Arrow dojang, we strive to teach basic
fundamentals such as courage, discipline, strength and conditioning. These
fundamentals are promoted starting at ages as early as 3 continuing throughout
life.
The art of Tang Soo Do:
Tang
Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan was developed from combining the teachings and techniques of
many traditional martial arts systems. Some of the martial arts styles that were
drawn on for its development are: the traditional systems of Tang Soo Do Moo Duk
Kwan; Karate Do; Aikido; Jujitsu; Tai Chi Chuan; Shaolin Kung Fu; Hai Dong Gumdo
(Korean Sword); Philippine Kali.
The
basic components that comprise the Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan curriculum are:
Meditation; stretching and conditioning; cardiovascular training; basic hand and
foot techniques (blocking, kicking and striking); hyungs (forms, preset patterns
of movement that teach students how make transitions between offensive and
defensive techniques); one-step sparring (block and counter techniques);
self-defense (grappling and joint
locking techniques); weapons training; free sparring techniques.
Tang
Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan was designed to foster a thorough understanding of the
concepts of self-defense and character development.
The principles stressed in
Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan are:
- Respect
- Confidence
- Discipline
- Mental alertness
